What are the implications if our Nanny is in a Nanny share?

Where two families employ a Nanny to look after all of
their children, i.e. a nannyshare - it is advisable to for
each family to set up their own separate PAYE schemes as this
will result in a considerable savings in National Insurance
contributions for each party without adversely affecting the
Nanny.
What about if our Nanny works for more than one employer in
the same week - i.e. two part time jobs?

Each employer has to account to the Inland Revenue for
Tax and National Insurance contribution (both employees and
employers) in their employment. But the amount of tax deducted
will be affected by the nanny's total earnings in the week
over both jobs as well as whether the nanny's personal tax
allowance (or tax free pay) is allocated entirely to one (main)
employment or spilt between both employments proportional
to time worked for each employer. Please contact the agency
for further guidelines.
Do I need to draw up a contract between my nanny and myself?

In
October 2002 a new law was passed stating that the courts
can impose a fixed penalty on employers who do not have a
contract of employment with their employee(s). We therefore
strongly advise all parents to draw up a proper contract.
A contract not only provides security in case of disputes
but more importantly it will help to clarify many of the issues
and points you may not have considered. For example, can your
nanny bring others in to the home. Can she use the telephone?
Will you expect her to help in the kitchen occasionally? Who
pays the additional premium on the car insurance?

What do all the different qualifications mean?

The most widely recognised Nanny qualifications are NNEB
(National Nursery Examination Board) now called Diploma in
Childcare and Education, BTEC or NVQ level 3. Please see qualification
guide.
